Three Fingered Jack Summit Climb | South Ridge Route
Follow four mountaineers as they summit Three Fingered Jack! We started at the Santiam Pass Trailhead near Sisters, OR. We climbed the South Ridge Route. We did this climb on June 30, 2023.
We hiked along the Pacific Crest Trail and through a burnt out forest from the B&B Complex Fire from 2003. Near the mountain, we turned onto the climbers trail to go up the South Ridge. As we made our way up the ridge, we had to navigate a section of the climb called the "Crawl" due to it being very steep and slow to navigate. Once through the "Crawl" we made it to the summit block which is a low 5th class climb to the summit. We had amazing views of the surrounding mountains (Mt. Washington, Black Butte). The summit of Three Fingered Jack has a height of of 7,841 feet.

Incredible video thank you! What time of year did you film this? I was up there this weekend but didnt spot any. Thank you!
Excellent video quality and narration. What would make this hike a 9/10 or the coveted 10/10?
did you summit though? isnt the summit further over on the ridge?
Thank you for all the info greetings from Africa Uganda
Glad it was helpful!
@@WithinHikingDistance yes nice to meet you where you come from?
Thank you for this great video! We are planning a trip this coming Spring, and this was incredibly useful.
Glad it was helpful!
Cute family video. We did that hike in May 2009, and had a waterfall flowing at the end of the trail.
So cool! Thanks for watching
Thank you for the beautiful video; it was just suggested to me now. I was there in October 2023. Unfortunately, there was a noticeable crack in my left calf when transitioning from the ladder to the rock, and I had a muscle tear. Therefore, I unfortunately couldn't make it to the arch. I was glad that after about 2 hours I was back at the parking lot, as it’s difficult to walk with the injury. The next day, the lower leg was very colorful.😎
stunning review
Thank you!
Thank you for all the info ☺️. Helpful 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Is there no supervision at the lake?
-More like a minor eruption at Biscuit Basin…a major eruption would have been catastrophic. Scary nonetheless.
Best video I’ve found from before the eruption 2024. I’m curious which pond/pool/geyser it occurred at.
Black diamond pool was the pool that had a hydrothermal explosion
Nice to see what it used to look like now that it's erupted and exploded today. 7/23/24.
Major eruption at Biscuit Basin this morning (7/23/24).
Interested in doing this hike with my pup. Are some parts of the trail narrow without much passing room?
Loma Verde, Squeeze Pen, Pink Hill loop should be on the list. We've seen deer, javelina, snakes, Gila Monsters and numerous birds along this loop. Great hike since there are oftentimes few people on the trail. Fewer people sometimes helps with seeing wildlife.
I can't tell from the video, what backpack were you using? Thanks in advance.
Gregory Baltoro 65
Great video! Do you have a brand of shoes/boots you prefer?
I like the La Sportiva Nepal Cube boots
I was abwolutely mesmerized by this patk. It 8d trily spectacular. The hikes to Di7nle Arch abd Sand Dune Arch were my favourites hut, i loved all of thrm
Is there a place to change clothes?
I believe there is a bathroom at the parking lot near the trailhead
12:33 - name of the mountain? in the far backround. What a beautiful view
That's on Mt. Adams. Thanks for watching
Be careful when walking in the middle of the road
Wow that’s cool! Thank you for this video. We heading there 1st week of June and will definitely to the same😆❤️
It is closer to 6 miles not 4
Did you hike this trail clockwise or counterclockwise?
Great video! Thank you! A couple questions for you- 1. roughly how many vertical feet was the section where you ascended the fixed line? 2. have you climbed Mt Hood, specifically prior to the middle sister climb? I'm trying to get an idea of the steepness of the steep section on Middle. I solo climbed Mt Hood via the 1 oclock couloir in june 2024, so that's my baseline for steepness. Thanks!
I have climbed Hood before Middle Sister up through the Pearly Gates. The steep section was maybe 200 ft. There were other people who had 2 ice axes climbing that section without a rope.
@@WithinHikingDistance thanks!
fun fact: they're giraffe relatives
Are you part of the Spokeman Mountaineers? I wanna do this end of September for my birthday, but I want a guided tour. Any recommendations?
Great video. Well done mate.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great work, thank you for this video.
Glad you liked it!
Thanks !
Welcome!
Go swim in it lol
What month was this in?
I think that was in August
Thanks!@@WithinHikingDistance
The year I was 60 yo (21 years ago) I did Mt. Adams 3 times in 3 weeks. Campground to summit to campground in one day. Actually drive in from Kennewick WA, climb and drive back the same day. It was prep for a Rainier climb. I did Hood twice - a week apart - prepping for Adams. St. Helens twice, a month apart with South Sister twice in between. That year, and the year before, I did Paradise to Muir a total of 28 times. Being 'in shape' makes walking around on mountains MUCH more enjoyable than not.
That's quite a workout routine you had. Awesome you were able to do so much.
That's incredible, Jim! For people who have not done hikes up to 10,000ft+ would you recommend any kind of altitude or low oxygen training prior to making a summit attempt?
Any tips on what gear I would need for this hike? Wonderful video!
For South Sister, just regular hiking gear: good pair of shoes, water, food, sunblock, and other hiking essentials. You can do it in a day.
What month did you visit? The weather looks so nice, not too hot.
I think that was in October
Nice start the kids early...the will love it the rest of their lives. Took ours everywhere at 8months on..
That is awesome!
Nice video and so cute your little guy finding a spot for his cars on the rocks! I lived in Fruita for 6 months a while back and looking forward to returning to the monument with my wife this September. An early Kostner bike riding movie was filmed there.
Awesome! Enjoy visiting Colorado NM in September.
If you enter Thors well you go to Valhalla asap?...😂😂
Nice!
Thanks!
I am not a hiker at all, but now just getting interested in it. My goal in life is to hike Telescope peak. Have ever hiked it? If so your thoughts on it?
We haven't hiked Telescope Peak. We had our little one with us on our trip so we kept to the shorter hikes.
Me and my daughter are planning another visit, your video popped up while I was doing research.. Hope you guys are doing well..
Hello “Within Hiking Distance”! Thank you for showing us such a wonderful video! I feel so happy! I look forward to your next work! Have a nice day!
Thank you so much!
Stupid camerman cut u down
Great video man! I was on the fence on which park i wanted to visit on my trip to Utah this summer and this video sold it.
Good to hear. It's a great park to visit. Be sure to also visit Canyonlands (Island in the Sky), which is short drive away.
Me and my buddy backpacked in to Thornton Lakes back in 98. Fly fishing the lower lake was a memory I will never forget. Also a massive thunder storm that night that went on for a couple hours. Not much cover up that high but we got through it . Wonderful video. Thanks for the memories.
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it!
Kirim ke indonesia biar saya coba mendaki di gunung gunung indonesia
Bought a Beta AR while I was in Juneau AK on vacation, didn't know anything about Arc'teryx before that trip but I prefer not having a storm hood to be honest. After a 7 mile hike with a hoodie and a neoprene long sleeve with t shirt under as a base I have zero complaints.
YOu covered it really well but one of my least favorite hikes of all times.
Thanks for watching!
So a cougar found a dead Pronghorn
No, it had just killed it when we saw it. We saw a group of Pronghorn hiding further up on the hill that we were hiking. They were all bunched up together and pretty scared.
